Album Review — The Treatment
The Treatment — Power Crazy
English rockers The Treatment are back with their fourth full length record, “Power Crazy”. The band has gone through many lineup changes and this record features new vocalist Tom Rampton. Despite all the transition, the band continues to put out high energy hard rock and “Power Crazy” is no different.
To me, The Treatment has always sounded a lot like AC/DC, and if it’s possible, they sound even more like AC/DC with Rampton on the mic. Imagine Bon Scott singing Johnson-era AC/DC. That’s what over half the record sounds like.
Opening track “Let’s Get Dirty” is the perfect example. High energy, riff-heavy rock. It’s not complicated but it’s fun to listen to. “Bite Back”, “Hang Them High” and “Laying It Down” follow a similar formula and are all fun to listen to. We also get a little Scott-era sound with “Luck of the Draw” which sounds a lot like “The Jack”.
But the band branches out a bit on a few standout songs. “On The Money” and “King of the City” sound like cool Thin Lizzy tunes and “Scar With Her Name” sounds a lot like “Sonic Temple”-era The Cult.
That’s a lot of comparisons to other bands, but by no means do they sound like a cover band. The band is tight and Rampton fits right in like he’s been in the band for years. And it’s never a bad thing to have your music compared to AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and The Cult.
As noted earlier, I wouldn’t say this band is breaking any new ground or have a unique sound. But what they do they do very well, and if you like this style of music you will dig the record.
I’d like to see the band keep some continuity in the lineup for a while to see if they can build off this record and craft a little more of their own sound. But for now I’ll enjoy this record for what it is.
