Album Review — Sons of Silver
Sons of Silver — Doomsday Noises
New music from a new band this week as Sons of Silver released “Doomsday Noises” last week. Vocalist Peter Argyropoulos is joined by some pretty impressive musicians. Original Pearl Jam drummer Dave Krusen, Candlebox bassist Adam Kury, former Skillet guitarist Kevin Haaland and keyboardist Brina Kabler round out the band.
The songs were written and recorded before the COVID-19 pandemic, but you’d never know it based on the lyrics. The band sounds almost prophetic as they deal with issues of social division and outbreak.
“Rude Awakenings” opens the EP. It’s got a Gaslight Anthem kind of sound to it. Argyropoulos sings of armageddon and the decay of society and the impact it has on him. The guitar riff that runs through the track is infectious. Off to a nice start.
“Outbreak” is next and has a similar sound to the opener. More catchy guitar riffs over a similar beat. Argyropoulos reminds me a bit of a cross between Vedder and Weiland with his lower range vocals with a touch of rasp.
I really like the next track, “Deep Division”. It’s a little more melodic than the first two tracks as Argyropoulos takes a smoother approach to his vocals. The guitar work isn’t flashy but it fits the tracks and draws the listener in. An excellent song.
“Read ‘Em Their Rights” returns to the sound of the first two tracks and might be even a little more aggressive. Again, I’m reminded of Gaslight Anthem as I listen to this one. It’s aggressive but melodic. Very guitar forward but not flashy. It’s quality rock and roll.
“World On Fire” ends the EP with another riff heavy track, a little less aggressive than the previous track but in the same vein.
If you like bands like Gaslight Anthem and newer Pearl Jam I think you’ll really enjoy Sons of Silver. Quality rock and roll with a conscious. I enjoy the sound of the band and that they take on issues in society without compromising the music.
After just a few listens I can already say that I hope I get to hear more from Sons of Silver.
