Album Review — Kobra & The Lotus
Kobra & The Lotus — Prevail II
I had never heard (or even heard of) Kobra and the Lotus before this week so I had no idea what to expect. I don’t really listen to the radio so I don’t get to hear new bands too often. My overall reaction going through the album is it’s not bad. To me, they sound like Evanescence with a little Hoobastank with some double bass. There are a few moments that are too heavy for my taste, but I like the majority of the songs.
The opening track, “Losing My Humanity”, sounds a lot like a heavy Hoobastank song, especially in the chorus. The second song, “Let Me Love You”, sounds like it’s the single. It’s very Evanescence-sounding to me.
Ribe is a cool acoustic instrumental which was unexpected. The fourth track is “My Immortal”, which has a Hoobastank-like riff running through. “Heartache” is probably the most melodic song on the record and one of my favorites.
The most interesting moment on the record is probably the loose cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain”. It’s a cool idea to cover the song and to put their own twist on it.
I would call this record a pleasant surprise. They are a little too theatrical for me and at times a little too chunky, but otherwise I like them. They aren’t a band that I would go out of my way to listen to, but I can appreciate them for what they are. If you are into Evanescence with less piano and more guitar, you will probably dig them.
