Album Review — Jetboy
Jetboy — Born To Fly
The last review from the Frontiers mega release day is Jetboy’s new record, “Born To Fly”. It’s been 20 years since this San Francisco band has released anything but when Frontiers came knocking they quickly got together and wrote a new record.
Not being a huge fan of the band, my expectations were limited going into my first listen and sometimes that’s the best approach to take. In this case, I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Finn still sounds good and his voice reminds me of Richard Black of Shark Island at times. The songs are varied in style which is nice and there are a couple of songs I really like.
“Beating The Odds” starts things off and is pretty heavy. It’s a good opening song for the record and closer to what I expected going in.
“Born To Fly” is up next and is the first of many songs that I really like. Finn sounds less rough which fits the song well. Jetboy always had that sound that I’m not sure how to describe. A combination of hard rock, punk and 50s rock similar to Faster Pussycat and others.
“The Way That You Move Me” has an acoustic feel to it which is another surprise. “Brokenhearted Daydream” is my favorite song on the record. It’s got a big chorus and is very catchy. It’s just a good rock song.
“Every Time I Go” has a similar feel to “Brokenhearted Daydream” with its straight ahead rock feel and catchy chorus.
The rest of the album is good but less melodic and more of what I was expecting. That glam/punk sound that they were known for back in the 80s. So if you liked Jetboy then you will still enjoy this record.
Having an album exceed your expectations is always a positive. That being said, this isn’t a record that will likely get a lot more spins for me just because it’s really not my favorite style of music. But I would recommend the record to any fan of the band or anyone that likes this style. The band still sounds good and Finn can still hold his own.
Overall — 80 out of 100
