Frank Hannon — From One Place To Another, Vol. 2

Tesla guitarist Frank Hannon released “From One Place to Another! Vol. 2” in May and not only did I miss it, I also missed Volume 1. So on a week with only a few releases and to celebrate Jack’s interview with Frank this week, we’ve decided to review Volume 2.

This is a straight covers record filled with mostly songs from the late 60s and early 70s. There are a bunch of guest musicians which you can see in the track listing below, but not a lot of familiar names to me.

The first four songs are all late 60s/early 70s classic rock that I assume Frank grew up listening to. They are all very close to the originals. “Lord of the Thighs” sticks out to me the best song. I thought for sure it was Jeff Keith (of Tesla) on vocals but I guess Hannon has learned to mimic his lead singer quite well.

The album takes a strange turn as Hannon covers Seal’s “Kiss From a Rose”. It’s a decent version, it just stuck out like a sore thumb among all these classic rock songs.

Other highlights include Hendrix’s “Spanish Castle Magic” and “Sweet Leaf” by Black Sabbath which has Hannon doing a remarkably similar old school Ozzy vocal.

Other than the Seal song, this album is full of well known Classic Rock songs that Hannon does a fine job of paying homage to. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of the majority of the originals here but if you love these songs as much as I’m sure Hannon does, you will definitely appreciate this record.

Overall, it’s a quality record but if I’m going to listen to a covers record I’ll throw on “Anthems” by Anthrax or “The Covering” by Stryper.

Grade — 75 out of 100
