Album Review — Dixie Horsepower
Dixie Horsepower — S/T
Dixie Horsepower’s first release is a 5-song EP. The band’s most well-known member is Tesla drummer Troy Luccketta. As the band name suggests, Dixie Horsepower is a southern rock band. Singer Kevin Lawson has a great voice and the songs have some nice hooks. The opening track, Full Tank, has a cool bluesy riff and is reminiscent of vintage Black Crowes. Round and Round is another good rocker in a similar vein as the opening track.
The mood goes a little country on the third track, Good to Go. The band is from Nashville so embracing the local sound makes sense. I could hear this song getting some airplay on the new country stations. It’s basically a pop rock song with some country instrumentation.
Matter of Time continues the more pop/rock country feel. The first two songs almost sound like a different band as tracks 3 and 4 are very poppy with big harmony vocals in the chorus and the guitar much less pronounced.
The country/blues Bad Idea closes out the EP.
Overall, I like the record. It’s a little more country pop than I expected, especially after the first two songs come out swinging. I like all the songs and although I’m not a country music fan, these are much more Bon Jovi/Lost Highway than your typical new country. Even though there are some good rock songs here, I’m guessing we are more likely to hear Dixie Horsepower on country radio than anywhere else.
Overall grade — 80 out of 100
