Dilana — Animal

The last we heard from Dilana she was fronting a new band called Vanishing Signs. I really liked that record. It was hard rock with a Deep Purple influence. Her voice was made for rock and roll. She’s got a little rasp and a naturally deeper tone with quite a bit of range. I was hoping the next thing we heard from her was something similar.

Her new “Animal” EP is nothing like Vanishing Signs. I understand artists can’t be pigeonholed and should have the freedom to make the kind of art they want to. And to her credit, Dilana’s new release has a lot of variety and shows off her versatility.

I’ll start with what I like. “Like A Stone” is a moody acoustic track that shows off Dilana’s soulful voice. I really like this track and wish we got more of this. It’s worth the price of the EP on its own.

“Oh Jericho” ends the EP and is another mostly acoustic track but with a very different feel than “Like A Stone”. Although I don’t know the origin of the track, it sounds like an older song.

The rest of the EP is not really my thing. “Kids Must Play” has an industrial sound to it. I appreciate the message of caring for the world’s children, but it doesn’t do much for me as a song.

Let’s just say I wasn’t a fan of “Animal” or “Da Big Man” and leave it at that. They are both far outside my musical taste.

Dilana definitely is very talented and clearly has a wide range of musical interests. I really enjoy her music when she’s in the genres that I listen to. She’s branched out on “Animal” further than my interests go. For those looking to go outside of rock and want something a little different, this might be worth a shot. “Like A Stone” is a real gem but I don’t imagine the rest of the record will get any more plays from me.
