Alter Bridge — Walk The Sky

It’s hard to believe that Alter Bridge has now released six studio albums. Their latest, “Walk The Sky”, was released in mid-October. For those that don’t know, the band consists of three original members of Creed plus vocalist/guitarist Myles Kennedy. Kennedy is a busy man, working with Slash and as a solo artist. Lead guitarist Mark Tremonti has his own band as well, Tremonti, that has released four studio records.

I am familiar with Alter Bridge and have liked what I have heard, but I haven’t spent a lot of time on one single album. I’ve been listening to “Walk The Sky” all week and, I have to say, if this record is any indication I should spend some more time on their back catalogue.

The album starts off with “One Life” which is a short track that serves as an introduction of sorts. This may be the only point of the record I’m not thrilled about and it’s only 83 seconds long.

The album gets jump started with “Wouldn’t You Rather”. Heavy guitar licks with a melodic chorus sets the tone for the record as there is much more to come.

“In The Deep” and “Godspeed” follow and are two of the better tracks on the record. Kennedy can handle the heavier tracks but he really shines on these more melodic tracks. “Godspeed” is a personal favorite.

Other album highlights include “Take The Crown”, “The Bitter End” and “Tear Us Apart”. I would put the top 5–6 tracks on this record up against any other record released this year. They are that good.

The rest of the tracks are all high quality. “Walk The Sky” is solid from start to finish. There are no fillers or throw away tracks, which is impressive considering the 14 tracks that are here. The band is solid, Tremonti has ample opportunity to shred and Myles Kennedy is a star and he shines brightest with this band.

If you are an Alter Bridge fan, you already have this record and I’m sure you love it. If like me you haven’t bought in to the band fully yet, this album will put you over the top. Don’t let the Creed relationship fool you, Alter Bridge is their own band and they are worth your time and your money.
